Ron is from the steel mill town of Aliquippa, Pennsylvania, 22 miles north of Pittsburgh along the Ohio River. He started taking music lessons when he was 6 years old. During this time he learned to sight read music; a skill that has served him well in his career. His goal was to play in symphonies but the drum kit was his passion. The early Lloyd Price and Elvis shuffles were the things that made him smile. While still playing in youth orchestras, he started playing in rock bands in 1961. The ability to read got him into local studios, playing for producers like Joe Rock. In 1965, after a Band of America tour of Europe, he moved to New York City and studied with the great Jim Chapin. The Vietnam War years saw him playing in an Air Force Band, where he took arranging courses from the Berklee School of Music. After discharge from the military in 1970, he started playing on jazz albums in NYC with, Eric Kloss, Pat Martino, Dave Holland, and Buster Williams. He moved to Los Angeles in 1973 where his first gig was with the renown Don Ellis Band. Being able to play the complicated charts with “A” studio players, transported his career into playing on films with a variety of composers such as Perry Botkin, Roger Kellaway, Billy Goldenberg, Snuff Garrett and Sid and Marty Croft shows. His film work continued through the 1980’s and 90’s.
During the 1970’s, he also started working for Mike Curb Productions with producers Michael Lloyd, John D’Andrea and the Scotti Brothers, recording for the teen idols of the time including Shaun Cassidy, Leif Garrett, Scott Baio, and John Schneider. Also during the 70’s he played with Olivia Newton-John, Seals and Crofts, Barry Manilow and as the rock drummer on the $100,000 Name That Tune Show. The 80’s had him still doing much more film and television work including Laverne and Shirley where he was in Lenny and Squiggy’s Band The Squigtones, touring with Sheena Easton, Melissa Manchester and the Everly Brothers Reunion World Tour 1985. He also starting recording for Dr. Dre, The remake of Ben Mardonis’ hit “Into The Night,” and The Marvel Studios house orchestra, where he got to work with Jim Henson doing the Sesame Street character “Animal” cues as well as other music productions for him. At that time Marvel was producing 17 animated shows per week.
In the early 90’s, he starting composing and created his music library. He currently is part of three other production libraries as well. His music has been used internationally and on multiple American networks. He wrote and produced over 60 jingles during this time as well.
His work in front of the camera includes: The Mafu Cage with Lee Grant, Laverne and Shirley, The Blue Valley Songbird with Dolly Parton. He also debuted at the Barrymore Theater on Broadway in the musical “Ring of Fire” directed by Tony winner Richard Maltby.
He currently lives in Nashville, tours as a member of the famed Memphis soul group The Box Tops. Ron still does sessions and plays in the bands Soul Sacrifice, a Santana Tribute band, The Bicho Brothers rock band, Twilight Train, a Neil Diamond Tribute, and other performances as well.
